1.Keep them clean
One of the easiest and most important maintenance steps you can perform on your major appliances is to keep them clean. Areas that should be wiped down on a regular basis include the gaskets on the oven and the refrigerator to prevent grimy buildups and to ensure that these appliances are efficiently sealed when their doors are closed. Brushing accumulated dust, dirt and pet hair off of the condenser coils at the rear of the refrigerator can facilitate efficient cooling and minimize demands on the most expensive component of this appliance.

While the current generation of new appliances has more functionality than ever, the slew of electronics designed into these products makes them vulnerable to power surges that can be generated by electrical shorts caused by damaged outlets and/or power cords.
